Review:

Story: There are some stories that you read that a character or multiple characters just kind of ruin it for you and make you not even want to read it. This is one of those books for me. I could not stand Tabor or his attitude at all. Especially his assumptions of things. He just drew conclusions and those conclusions were set in stone for him. Had it not been for other characters in this book, I probably would have considered setting this book down. I can’t think of anything else to discuss about it. Not without my review being longer than the story itself.

Characters: Echo was a pretty amazing character. She had her flaws, but she’s had to make some pretty tough decisions over the years. What really endears me to her is how she put her kid above all. No matter what. Speaking of the kid, Kat was so stinking cute! I wish I got to see more of her in the book!

Critiques: Some parts should have been explained better.

Final Thoughts: I’m not saying that I didn’t like this story. I really did. I loved the suspense littered through the entire story. I loved seeing how well Echo fit in with the boys. I loved the quirky moments that her child were in. I just really could not stand Tabor. It feels like even his own people couldn’t stand him in this book. He’s on the list of the very few characters that made me legitimately angry.

Review:

Story: This story is a very short and spicy read. I know that the official term is short and sweet, but I meant what I said. There are a few questions I have that were more referenced than really explained. I also was curious on the grammar of some things. There are names that I felt should have been capitalized that weren’t. That could have been done on purpose for all I know. I thought this was a very creative read. Normally with shorter novels, I say that I want and crave more. I won’t say that this one. The length of this book was perfect. I feel like if it were any longer it could risk dragging on. I could be wrong on that.

Characters: At first, Gypsy kind of confused me. The name not the person. I kept expecting it to be a girl. That’s just things that I’m used to. I didn’t really feel a connection with any of the characters. I think I could have. Maybe one day I’ll go back and read the book again and see what happens.

Critiques: None that I can think of really.

Final Thoughts: This was definitely a short and spice packed story. It glosses over a dom sub relationship and a potential for another one. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. Especially if they are as short as this one. I recommend this book for those who love books with more of a spice level and arranged marriage type things. There is a bit of suspense but it doesn’t drag on.

Review:

Story: This story is just so adorable! It’s very short and sweet. When it comes to spice, I would say this story has a very mild spice. Which is perfect for me. While I would have loved to see more to this story, I can totally appreciate the length. It’s the perfect story to just escape the world for a while. Whether it be due to a bad day or just boredom. I found out after the fact that this book is the third book in a series. Luckily for me, it’s a standalone series. I’ll still go back and read the other two when I can. The author has a wonderful writing style.

Characters: Apollo had a very interesting name. I was convinced it was fake. I kept expecting for that bombshell to drop. I can’t remember the girl’s name, but wow what a scare she went through! I can’t even begin to figure it all out!

Critiques: None

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story way more than I thought I would. I love supporting authors by trying out new books. I also always go into books blindly. Well I always say blindly, but I do come up with theories before I start them. Just by the title and the cover. I don’t read blurbs if I can help it. Anyways, this story was so short and so cute. I’m glad I stumbled upon it! It was a very refreshing change up!

Review:

Story: I enjoyed the book very much. I felt like I was really invested in it from the very beginning. I did think that there were parts that were glossed over. It also kind of left me with a very unfinished feeling. I’d be okay with a sequel. I know that it’s referenced things that happened after that point, but only to an extent. I just kind of felt like I was left with more questions than answers when it was all said and done.

Characters: This is one of the books where I just didn’t care for the main character at all. I didn’t dislike him though. I just wanted to shake some sense into him. I mean I get it. He’s young. He was just all over the place though.

Critiques: There are many things that are referenced in this book that I would have liked to see more elaboration on. I don’t want to say too much because some of them are at the end of the book and I don’t want to give spoilers. I do feel like this story begs for either a sequel or an epilogue. Something to tie the loose ends together and explain what happened to certain characters better as well.

Final Thoughts: I really did enjoy this book very much. I can’t say I was in love with it or that it was one of my favorites. I had a wonderful time reading it though. If it weren’t for the parts that I felt like should have been elaborated on more, I would actually love this book and probably make it a reread. As it were, I’d still recommend this book. I love how raw and realistic it is.

The Book of Uriel

A Novel of WWII

by Elyse Hoffman

[BLACKBERRY BOOK TOURS]

September 27-30

YA, 303 pages.

Link for the book on Amazon

In the fires of World War II, a child must save his people from darkness…

Ten-year-old Uriel has always been an outcast. Born mute in a Jewish village known for its choir, he escapes into old stories of his people, stories of angels and monsters. But when the fires of the Holocaust consume his village, he learns that the stories he writes in his golden notebook are terrifyingly real.

In the aftermath of the attack, Uriel is taken in by Uwe, a kind-hearted linguist forced to work for the commander of the local Nazi Police, the affably brutal Major Brandt. Uwe wants to keep Uriel safe, but Uriel can’t stay hidden. The angels of his tales have come to him with a dire message: Michael, guardian angel of the Jewish people, is missing. Without their angel, the Jewish people are doomed, and Michael’s angelic brethren cannot search for him in the lands corrupted by Nazi evil.

With the lives of millions at stake, Uriel must find Michael and free him from the clutches of the Angel of Death…even if that means putting Uwe in mortal danger.

The Book of Uriel is a heartbreaking blend of historical fiction and Jewish folklore that will enthrall fans of The Book Thief and The World That We Knew.

An otherworldly tale with indelible characters in a realistic wartime setting. Hoffman’s novel sublimely fuses world history and Jewish folklore.

Review:

Story: I go into books blindly. It’s just what I do. So sometimes, I try to figure out what the story is going to be like based on the cover. With this cover, I was expecting something gothic or horror filled. While this story was dark, it was not at all what I thought it was going to be. I really enjoyed every page of it. I have actually been considering getting a physical copy to have on my shelf for future re-reads. Maybe even to recommend and lend to friends. I have it in ebook and audiobook currently. I really loved the messages that were packed into this story as well.

Characters: Uriel’s a very sweet boy. I believe he’s about ten. He’s portrayed in the story as a mute. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he was actually autistic. He reminded me so much of my sister. I also loved Uwe. He’s doing a job he has to do, but he keeps his morals. He doesn’t let anybody talk him into believing a certain way just because it’s the easier way to do it. I’d have loved to see more of Matthias in the story. I’d of also loved for something to have happened that I knew couldn’t have. Sorry that’s vague. I don’t do spoilers.

Critiques: None except I donโ€™t like crying! (Cheeky critique at best)

Narration: The narrator did a really great job. They also had a very relaxing voice. I was still able to feel the punch of emotions that you were supposed to feel through the story. In fact, I believe the narrator intensified the emotional punches!

Final Thoughts: This book is a wonderful book. It’s got many powerful messages. It gives the feeling of hope and growth. It also highlights ugly realities nobody really likes to think about. I would read this book again. Probably more than once. I definitely recommend it. Please keep in mind that it is set in Poland during the World War 2 era. That’s all I can think to say about it.

Story: I’ve been wanting to read this book since I’ve gotten it. Things just always seemed to get in the way! I am a sucker for longer books. This book is a tome! It’s just so intense. I was here for every single page! I can’t wait to dig into the rest of the series! I own them all in ebook. Eventually, I will own them in physical book. If they are ever released in audio, I will be getting them in that format too. I will definitely be reading this book again in the future.

Characters: This book is told in two points of view. At first, that kind of confused me because I missed the switch sometimes and was thinking I was still reading from the other point of view. There were quite a few characters I loved in this book. There were some I hated as well. Like Cassia’s father. I just have too many to name off. I will write a novel on my own trying to list them all.

Critiques: None

Final Thoughts: When I was first told about this book, I knew I would love it. I got a gut instinct about it if you will. When it comes to books, I always trust my gut instinct. It has never led me wrong. I may take forever getting to books, but I always get there eventually. This cover is gorgeous, and the story is even more gorgeous. I fully recommend this book! Just be mindful that it’s a longer book for those of who don’t really care for long books.

Review:

Story: This story came in hot from the very beginning. With the cover, I was expecting a very cheesy wholesome story. I wasn’t expecting it to be an episode of Criminal Minds with a romantic undertone. It’s told in two points of view. It’s completely rare for me to get sucked into the story from the very beginning. Usually it takes me a couple of chapters to really get into it. This one is one of the rare ones. If I didn’t have such a busy schedule, I’d of probably read it all in one sitting. I’d definitely read it again a few more times.

Characters: Mia is a psychologist. She experienced a traumatic event. She chose to help people who have been through similar things as her way of healing. Easton is former military. He runs a training course and has been contracted by the military to run soldiers through this course. Both of these characters are tough and fierce, but they are also vulnerable in their own way.

Critiques: I really think the cover should be reconsidered. You look at the cover and see something sweet and relaxed. It’s a bit misleading. I know they say that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but the cover should at least give you an idea of what you’re going into.

Narration: I listened to the rest of this in audiobook. I found that it was on Kindle Unlimited to read and listen to. I took advantage. The narration was pretty amazing. I may listen to the whole thing the next time I read this book.

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story very much. I felt like I was reading an episode of criminal minds that had a bit of romance and spice in it. I stress a bit. There’s not really a lot in there. The main focus of the book is the attacks that keep happening and finding out who is responsible. I absolutely love that. It’s the reason I will read this book again. It’s also the reason that I fully recommend it.

Review:

Story: This is a prequel for Gathering of the Four. The story in this book is referenced in Gathering multiple times. I was really curious about the story and was hoping to read about it, so this book made me really happy. There is a bit of steam in this book. It accents the story very well in my opinion. In some ways, I wish I’d read this book before I read Gathering. There were just so many things that I knew because of reading Gathering that I felt kind of like I knew something I really shouldn’t know about the story. Either way, I still enjoyed both books. I’m really looking forward to the sequel of Gathering!

Characters: I really loved getting to know Octavia and Gerald more. Especially Gerald. I feel like he’s really misrepresented in Gathering. At least I feel that way now after reading this book. He kind of comes off as a coward who can’t be counted on or trusted. I don’t think it’s that he can’t be trusted or counted on. I think he just knows when to make waves and when not to. Octavia is so amazing. I could see her running an entire kingdom in all honesty.

Critiques: In jest: It’s too short! I need more!!! In seriousness: Nothing.

Final Thoughts: I really loved getting to see the story of Octavia and Gerald. When I read Gathering, it was referenced so many times I started wishing I could see it in book form. I will definitely be reading this book again. I’ll also be reading Gathering again as well. Probably near the time that the second time comes out. Gotta make sure I’m refreshed on the story before diving into the sequel, of course. I definitely recommend this book. I also recommend Gathering.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR:

What was the inspiration behind Gathering of the Four and Yours And Mine?

Hello! Thanks so much for having me.

I think, to start, Iโ€™m going to have to answer this question backward. I never set out to write a romance, but once I got inspired, I kind of couldnโ€™t help myself.

As I was getting Gathering of the Four ready for publication in late 2020, one of my critique partners made a comment about how they couldnโ€™t get enough of Octavia and Gerald and it would be fun to learn how they got together.

(I think every writer dreams about hearing comments like thisโ€”โ€œI love your characters; I want more!โ€)

I had recently started reading more romance and was immersing myself in the genre and so I thought, why not?

Thus, Octavia and Geraldโ€™s โ€œorigin storyโ€ was born.

As folks may or may not know, Octavia and Gerald are side characters in Gathering of the Four, which is far from a romance. Itโ€™s the first book in my speculative fiction series, The Serrulata Saga, which combines elements of scifi and fantasy.

Iโ€™ve been working The Serrulata Saga for over twenty years now. Gathering of the Fourโ€”or GotF as Iโ€™ve nicknamed itโ€”started off as a short story about a teenaged girl who had magical powers. (I was in high school; yes, the main character was a version of me.)

As I matured, so did the story, and now there are four main charactersโ€”Leora, Roland, Aurora, and Leopoldโ€”who have been sent out on an epic quest through treacherous lands. Lands that used to be the United States, that is.

I donโ€™t know yet how many books there will be total in this series, but I can tell you that Test of the Four: Book Two of the Serrulata Saga will be out in November.

How long did it take you to write each book?ย

As I said, Iโ€™ve been working on versions of The Serrulata Saga for decades, but I started polishing GotF and researching what it would take to self-publish back around 2018 or so.

After I launched GotF in early 2021, I began work on Yours and Mine. Shockingly, I had a workable first draft/manuscript by the end of that summer and published in December, 2021.

What can we expect from the rest of the series?

Iโ€™m very excited to share that I have another Serrulata Saga romance in the works. This one was just sent off to my editor for initial edits recently and, if all goes according to plan, it will be available sometime early next year.

As I said earlier, the second book in the main Serrulata Saga story is due out this November.

I also have two other stories in various stages: yet another romance and a horror novella.

And, after all of this, Iโ€™ll need to get started on the third book in the main series.

So, long story shortโ€”a lot more Serrulata Saga is coming!

Were there any parts of the book that were harder to write than others?

Honestly? The steamy scenes were a bit of a challenge for me at first. Turns out reading smoking hot scenes and writing them are two completely different things! While writing Yours and Mine I learned that sex scenes need just as much, if not more, choreography than fight scenes!

I think I did ok, though. No oneโ€™s complained yet!

What characters were easier for you to write and what characters were the hardest?

Most of the characters in Yours and Mine were already very familiar to me since they are all side characters, or at least mentioned, in GotF. I guess if I had to pick, it was kinda hard to write Tristian Verte, but only because, well, things donโ€™t go so well for him in GotFโ€ฆ

Have you written any other books under different names?

No. Iโ€™m sticking to A.E. Bennett for now.

Do you have any other plans outside of The Serrulata Saga?

Not at this time. I might eventually want to branch out but, for now, Iโ€™m all Serrulata Saga, all the time!

As an author, do you feel itโ€™s easier to go with the flow or map your books out?

Iโ€™ve spoken about this in other forums but I initially didnโ€™t plan much of anything with regards to GotF and it was a mess. As I got my first book ready for launch, I realized there was no way I could keep moving forward without a plan. Now, I have a rough outline for the entire series and I always outline every book before I start writing. I donโ€™t always stick to what I originally plan with each book, but I do need a starting point. I find it saves timeโ€ฆ and my sanity!

How much influence do your characters have over the stories you write?

Well, there are certain characters who need to be in certain places at certain times in order for the overall story to keep moving, but they donโ€™t always get to where they need to be exactly how I planned. So, letโ€™s just say itโ€™s a give-and-take relationship between me and my MCs. Haha.

What advice would you give other authors who are looking to get into publishing?

I say this every time Iโ€™m asked this question, but I want to spare others the embarrassment I went through.

Please, please get your work proofread by someone other than yourselfโ€”and professionally, if you can.

The first version of GotF was full of spelling and grammatical mistakes because I thought I could do it all on my own. The version thatโ€™s out there now is corrected and all neat and tidy, but I only got it there because I paid someone to take another look at it.

You cannot proofread your own work! Donโ€™t do it! ๐Ÿ˜€

I would also invite folks who have more questions to reach out to me via the info on my Contact page. I certainly donโ€™t have all of the answers, but I do like sharing what I do know with others.

Review:

Story: I jumped at this book because I absolutely loved the title. I can honestly say that I knew nothing about it. I kind of thought it would be a cheesy romance full of angst and misunderstandings. In all actuality, it is a romcom-type book. However, it wasn’t full of angst and misunderstandings. So I was able to really enjoy it. I actually wish it had been longer so that I could stay in the world longer. There are parts that I kind of wish had gotten played out more. Things that had an intense build-up that kind of just fell flat at the end. At least it did for me.

Characters: I really adored Piper very much. I’d love to own a little bakery-type shop like she does! I would have loved to see more actual scenes in it, to be honest. I’d also love to see her brother a little more. There were a lot more characters I want to get more of. I also loved Gus. He’s so great! He’s also very humble. He comes home and a position is offered to him that he’s more than qualified for, but he doesn’t want to step on toes.

Critiques: I really just wish it was a lot longer. I wish there were certain scenes that got played out more. I’m not going to bring up the specific scenes due to spoiler potential. However, I’m more than willing to have a conversation with the author about it if they reach out.

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story very much. It was cute. It was quirky. It was a really enjoyable read. I enjoyed it so much that I hassled somebody who means a lot to me to read the book too. I really want to talk about this book with somebody. I really didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did. I am so excited to read the rest of the series! I wish I could own all of them in paperback format. If these get turned into audiobooks, I’m grabbing the entire set!
