Review:

I was really enjoying this book when I hit a wall. Then I had to set it down. I knew that if I had read any more that I’d fall into a rut and force myself to finish the book. I want to stress that this is NOT because the book is bad. It’s because the reading mood gremlin came to visit. I couldn’t get into a romance novel no matter how hard I tried. Luckily, after reading a couple of other genres, I feel like I had a reset.

This is a spicy novel, but there’s a lot more to it than that. One of which is literally written into the title. Scandal, and lots of it. There’s also some mystery and intrigue. The book starts out by Josie getting a note to meet somebody out in the garden. Once she gets there, something happened that she was not expecting at all. Something that put her reputation in serious jeopardy.

I love the fact that even though there’s a bit of a miscommunication trope in here, it’s not overly cringy. It makes me realize that it’s not the trope itself that I don’t like. It’s the overexaggerating of it that grates on my nerves. This author does a really great job at keeping your engagement from page one to the very end. Things happen at a certain pace that just makes the story flow that much better!

Weekly Coloring Projects: August 30th, 2023

They are doing photos on the app to support organizations. I’m not sure if they are adding more, but so far they have Meals on Weals and Make a Wish. It really hit my heart and I just had to color and display some of the photos that I’ve colored from them. I’ve also really enjoyed reading the little pieces that come with each photo. I love the Happy Color app!

Review:

This book. It is so deep and thought provoking. It’s written by a POC about POC issues. I don’t think anybody else could have portrayed the story better if I’m being honest. It’s raw. It’s deep. It’s emotional. It’s told by multiple points of view. Each of them going through their own problems. I really felt so much for most of the characters in this book.

There are many issues that I can’t speak about. It’s not my history to speak about. I can say that I see it and understand it. I have never and will never turn a blind eye to that kind of thing. I will always use my voice against things that happen in that regards. I will leave it at that.

There are many aspects in this book that are dark. Besides the obvious aspects of racism that should always be shown in a realistic light. There’s also violence and mental instability. There’s something that happens in the book that also might be triggering. However, stating it in the review might be a spoiler.

The messages in this book are powerful. If I had been reading along as I listened, I would have quotes to share in this review. There were so many passages in this book that really impacted me greatly. Maybe one day I will reread the book so that I can pull the quotes that meant something to me. I’m glad that I had a chance to read this book. I’m glad that the person who runs my book club chose this as the book to read this month!

I read this book for our local book club. I had never heard of it before. I’m really glad that we chose to read it. It was a really good book that I enjoyed very much. I feel like I learned so much about an event that I’d never heard about before. I also feel like I see Savannah in a new light. The next time I go there, I will be looking for the statue referenced in this book. I really recommend this book. It’s packed with so much emotions and history. It’s rich with intensity and thought-provoking passages.

The Winged Spirits Trilogy (Book One- The Seldom Wings) ebook

The Seldom Wings (Winged Spirits Series Book 1) Publication Date: August 29, 2023 Genre: Adult Dark Fantasy 🔥 A Morally Gray FMC 🔥 Pansexual Rep 🔥 Witcher Vibes 🔥 Unbreakable Promises 🔥 Spice 🔥 Wings 🔥 Sleeping with the Enemy 🔥 Action/ Adventure For years, Sia’s hidden herself in the gnashing forest, dodging her father’s bounty hunters and ignoring the nameless magic in her veins. When she receives a letter from an estranged lover, she returns to the coast she used to call home, within reach of her father’s magical city hovering above the smog and the arranged marriage waiting for her. This place is not somewhere Sia wishes to linger—the land is noxious and filled with rebels, witches, and other humans who become walking corpses when they die. What was intended to be a brief visit turns into a death-bed promise anchoring Sia to Gwaith House for the foreseeable future. She agrees to look after her first love’s human child until her widower proves he can care for his daughter himself. The thing with promises is: Sia can’t break them. No seraph can. At least, not without severe consequences. While navigating the complex feelings she develops for the angry widower and her own grief, Sia becomes entangled in a mysterious string of dismembered corpses roaming the smog and a strange detective who refuses to leave her alone. As the desperate undead draw closer and closer to the child she is sworn to protect, Sia races to find the murderer responsible for creating them. She needs to figure it out quickly, or she may risk falling right back into her father’s scorching hands.

Excerpt

“It’s you,” he said in a mighty exhale. “You really are hiding down here in the smog, fraternizing with humans.”

My heart bottomed out. “Where I go and what I do is none of your business.”

His lips curled in wry amusement. “Isn’t it?”

Everything inside me went cold. He knew who I was. Reluctantly, I asked, “What exactly were you doing down here when you were captured?”

The seraph’s head tilted, the slow consideration of a predator.

“What do you think, Princess?” He rolled his shoulders and flashed his teeth, a lazy show of aggression. “I was collecting a bounty.”

I put the box between us as he prowled forward, raising my dagger in warning.

“Where do you think you’re going?” His eyes followed my every step. “You know you can’t outrun me, not with your pretty golden wings put away.”

Two Rivers Book Tour

TwoRivers copy

Welcome to the book tour for Bob Roger’s novel, Two Rivers. Read on for more details!

Front_Cover_TwoRivers

Two Rivers: De Trouble I Be See
Publication Date: June 10, 2023
Genre: Historical Fiction/ Americana/ Southern Gothic

July 1854, Colleton District, South Carolina A half-dozen years before Abe Lincoln’s inauguration, comes another collision between European immigrants and African abductees that does not end well. By 1854, the Tiffany family had enslaved over 300 Africans for more than a century on the 1,100-acre slave labor camp that they called the Tiffany Plantation. The Tiffanys were the largest rice producer in South Carolina’s Colleton District. While the toil of enslaved Africans earned untold riches for the Tiffanys, the Africans endured violence inflicted to force increased rice production and profits followed by the indignity of the bodies of loved ones being stolen from their graves and delivered to a medical school. Determined to put a stop to robberies of African graves was Posey, an eighty-four-year-old man whose ancestors came from the shores of the Bigh of Biafra, now known as Nigeria. It was Posey’s expert river-irrigation skills that made Tiffany crops successful. More conflict arose when James, the new general manager at Tiffany, realized that Posey’s expertise would be essential for the success of a plantation he planned to gain with ill-gotten money and slave mortgage-backed securities. All the while, the widow Ella, an enslaved nurse-midwife, sought to realize her dream of marrying widower Posey. Matters grew worse when Posey thwarted James’ first attempt to force his attention on Penny, a comely young enslaved wife and mother. Rich with history and a cast of unforgettable characters, Two Rivers is a sweeping saga of two peoples, European immigrants and African abductees. Together, they experience courtships, infanticide, homicide, rape, rebellions, revenge, sabotage, storms, high-stakes gambling, grave-robbing, counterfeiting, and more. “De troubles Posey be sees” in Two Rivers reminds one of Southern Gothic storytelling

Review:

Where do I even begin? I am giving this a full star rating. Mainly because of how absolutely disturbing the book is. I want to say before I even begin the review that this book has many triggers. It’s not for people who find it hard to cope with traumatic events. Especially those involving things happening to children. I’m not going to say much more than that.

This book was basically a Criminal Minds written without the FBI’s point of view in my opinion. I can’t even begin to explain why I say that. I couldn’t even begin to explain what this book made me feel. I think I’m going to need to process this book for quite a while. I didn’t even begin to try to predict things.

There were parts that absolutely horrified me and made me sick. I guess that’s the whole point of the book though if we’re being honest. I mean this book has many mentally unstable people. I’m not sure if anybody in this book was completely stable if I’m being honest. I was a little sensitive to the things that were happening throughout the book. I pushed through anyway. I wanted to find out what happened and why.

I think one of the biggest things I couldn’t stand was how Mia was talked down to. It gave me major Girl on the Train vibes in that regard. I’m not saying that the two books are alike. I’m just saying that the way she was treated was like that. I can’t even begin to think of anything that this book reminds me of. My closest comparison is the Criminal Minds one I made earlier. I did enjoy it very much. I will be reading other books by this author.
